Horticulture Therapy 2021
People do undergo mental and physical health issues due to various reasons and certain life-related conditions. However, some mental and physical health-related conditions can be treated with the use of horticulture therapy. So, what is horticulture therapy and how can it be used for human well-being?
Horticulture Therapy: –
Horticulture Therapy is a kind of treatment that is used to evaluate the mental and physical disabilities of patients. It is a process in which a person engages in plant-based and gardening activities through which he/she can achieve the specific therapeutic treatment goals. It is believed that horticulture therapy can improve the quality of life as the person gets in direct contact with plants focusing on their growth. It is an active process followed by Horticulture therapists who are trained and educated with the help of psychiatrists, occupational therapists, doctors, psychologists, and others through which they guide patients in all phases of gardening and bring improvement in their life.
Types of Horticulture Treatment: –
Therapy goals and treatments vary from person to person based on their mental and physical health conditions. However, in order to meet their therapeutic needs, horticulture therapists can make use of nursing homes, schools, institutions, prisons, etc. Furthermore, some of the basic types of horticulture therapy are vocational, therapeutic, and social treatments. Let’s get into each one of them in detail.
1. Vocational Horticulture Therapy: –
Vocational Horticulture therapy is used to treat mental and physical disabilities with various teachings and activities that include how to plant a tree in a container or ground, water them at the desired intervals, and move or transplant them within their space. It is a skill that can enhance the behaviour of people in a job or at the workplace. Adding to this, some of the skills that patients learn from horticulture therapists are vegetable gardening, greenhouses, plant, tree, and shrub care, sales, plant production, and services.
Furthermore, in vocational horticulture therapy, people are made to learn about the plant’s root system, how to grow and maintain different plants, how it can support you financially and thus, enable you to enhance your physical and mental health.
2. Therapeutic Horticulture Therapy: –
It is believed that getting close to nature has some restorative properties that can treat your mental illness. With this focus, therapeutic horticulture therapy enables you to enhance your social skills, physical activity, and engagement. For this, as a course of action, you need to dig soil, plant saplings, water them consistently according to the need, observe the change and plant growth, transplant if needed, and thus, perform every activity in the complete life cycle of plants. Furthermore, with this process, a significant positive vibe develops in your lifestyle as the plant’s growth excites you and thus, creates enthusiasm within you.
3. Social Horticulture Therapy: –
Social horticulture therapy is a kind of activity-based treatment that focuses on the plant’s growth. In this kind of therapy, a horticulture therapist shares knowledge on how you can cure certain ailments by adding various species and herbs to your meals. Furthermore, these herbs and spices can be grown in your own home garden, where you or your family member can go, pick, and add them to your meals.
